Marine Battery Guide — Types, Brands & Systems

Your battery bank is the heart of your boat's electrical system. Choose the wrong chemistry and you'll either replace batteries every two years or spend money on a charger that doesn't match. This guide covers all three major battery types used on sailboats, the leading brands in each category, and what you need to know about charging and system design.

The two battery jobs on a sailboat: A house bank powers all your 12V loads (lights, electronics, autopilot, refrigeration) and is discharged and recharged daily. A starting battery delivers a short burst of high current to start the engine and is never deeply discharged. These are different jobs — ideally handled by separate batteries of the right type.

Battery Type Comparison

Characteristic Flooded / Wet Cell AGM Lithium (LiFePO4)
Upfront cost (100Ah) $80–$150 $150–$300 $400–$1,000+
Cycle life (typical) 200–400 cycles 400–600 cycles 2,000–5,000+ cycles
Usable capacity 50% (discharge to 50% safely) 50–60% 80–100%
Weight (100Ah 12V) ~65 lbs ~60 lbs ~25–31 lbs
Maintenance Regular — check water level, vent hydrogen gas None — sealed None — sealed with BMS
Self-discharge High (~5–15%/month) Low (~1–3%/month) Very low (~1–2%/month)
Charge speed Slow — must absorb at low current Moderate Fast — accepts high charge current
Cold weather performance Reduced below 32°F Reduced below 32°F Cannot charge below 32°F without heater
Drop-in replacement Yes — same charger as stock Yes — same charger profiles No — requires lithium-compatible charger/alternator
Best for sailboat Budget builds, occasional use, trailerable boats Most production sailboats, cruising on a budget Liveaboards, offshore cruisers, solar-heavy systems
Lithium warning: You cannot simply swap lithium batteries into a system designed for lead-acid. Your alternator must have an external regulator or be lithium-compatible. Standard alternators will overheat and fail when charging lithium. Your charger must have a lithium profile. Failure to address this will destroy your alternator.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Batteries

The chemistry that changed liveaboard sailing. 3–5× the usable capacity in half the weight. 10× the cycle life of AGM. The math works — but the system must be built correctly.

Lithium System Requirements

  • Lithium-compatible battery charger — must have a LiFePO4 charging profile (no float, or very low float voltage ~13.5V). Victron Blue Smart, Mastervolt, Sterling, and Victron Skylla all have lithium profiles.
  • Lithium-compatible MPPT solar controller — Victron SmartSolar, Renogy Rover, and most modern MPPT controllers have LiFePO4 settings.
  • Alternator protection — most critical and most overlooked. Lithium accepts charge so fast that a standard alternator will overheat. Solutions: external regulator (Wakespeed WS500, Balmar MC-614), or a DC-DC charger (Victron Orion) isolating the alternator from the lithium bank.
  • Battery Monitor — essential with lithium; Victron BMV-712 or SmartShunt are the standards. Lithium's flat discharge curve makes a shunt-based monitor mandatory — voltage alone tells you nothing.
  • Low-temperature protection — lithium cannot be charged below 32°F (0°C) or cells are permanently damaged. Either: use a heated battery (RELiON RB-LT), install a battery heater pad, or configure the BMS/charger to disable charging below freezing.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) Batteries

The practical choice for most sailboat upgrades. Sealed, maintenance-free, spill-proof, works with existing chargers. The best AGMs last 5–7 years with proper care.

Flooded Battery Maintenance

  • Check electrolyte level monthly — top off with distilled water only (never tap water)
  • Keep terminals clean and coated with battery terminal grease or Vaseline
  • Equalization charge every 30–90 days with a smart charger that has an equalize mode — this breaks down sulfation and brings all cells to the same state of charge
  • Specific gravity testing with a hydrometer is the most accurate way to assess state of charge and cell health
  • Ventilate the battery compartment — flooded batteries off-gas hydrogen during charging. A hydrogen-air mixture at 4–74% concentration is explosive. This is not optional.
  • Keep batteries upright at all times — spilled acid destroys fiberglass, bilge pumps, and anything else it touches
Flooded batteries and bilge blowers: Run your bilge blower for several minutes before starting the engine — and before going into the battery compartment with a flashlight or anything that could spark. Standard safety practice.
