⛵ Alaska — Sailing Resources

Alaska offers world-class cruising, especially in Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage (Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Petersburg). Summers are busy with transient yachts; winters are quiet. Infrastructure is limited compared to the Lower 48. No mandatory statewide boating education card, but courses are strongly recommended.

Marinas & Harbors

Most sailboat activity in Alaska is along the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska. Transient moorage in summer can be competitive. Here are key options:

Reservations are highly recommended in peak season (May–September). Many harbors are operated by local municipalities. Check the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities or individual city harbormaster offices for current rates and availability.

Marine Surveyors

Alaska has a limited number of resident accredited marine surveyors. Many boat owners use surveyors based in Washington state or arrange for fly-in surveys.

When buying a boat in Alaska, allow extra time and budget for a qualified surveyor to travel to the vessel's location.

Brokerages

The Alaska sailboat market is relatively small. Buyers often work with brokers in Washington or British Columbia as well.
