⛵ New Mexico - Sailing Resources
New Mexico's primary sailing venue is Elephant Butte Lake, the state's largest reservoir (southern NM near Truth or Consequences), offering strong thermal winds, islands, and a scenic high-desert setting. Navajo Lake in the northwest provides another major option with a long shoreline. Other smaller reservoirs exist; trailer-sailors and smaller boats are common. Water levels fluctuate with drought and dam releases; afternoons often bring puffy winds. The Rio Grande Yacht Club is the hub for organized sailing and racing.
Boater Education
- New Mexico State Parks / EMNRD Boater Education - A New Mexico boater education card is required for operators of motorized vessels (gas/electric) and for sailboats. If born on or after January 1, 1989, you must complete an approved NASBLA course and carry the card onboard. Non-residents holding a valid card from another state are generally exempt. New residents or recent boat purchasers have 30-45 day grace periods before needing a NM card. The card is valid for life and accepted in many other states.
Approved courses: free BoatUS Foundation online (state-approved for NM), Boat-Ed.com/newmexico, iLearnToBoat, and other NASBLA providers; also in-person classroom courses taught by State Park rangers (calendar at EMNRD site). After passing, you receive a certificate (temp for 45 days) and the official card is mailed. Carry proof onboard. Full details, exemptions, and replacement info on the official EMNRD State Parks boating education page. Min age typically 13 for unsupervised operation of sailboats/motorboats/PWC.
Marinas & Harbors
Elephant Butte Lake (in Elephant Butte Lake State Park) is the sailing centerpiece with two main marinas offering slips suitable for sailboats. Navajo Lake (Navajo Lake State Park) in northern NM is the other primary boating destination. Public boat ramps are available at the state parks. Transients and long-term slips exist but call ahead; summer weekends busy. Lake levels vary significantly—check current conditions.
Elephant Butte Lake (Southern NM)
- Marina Del Sur (Elephant Butte Lake State Park main entrance) - Full-service marina with covered and uncovered slips for sailboats, cruisers, and more. Offers boat rentals, fuel, grocery, supplies, and dockside facilities. Convenient central lake access.
- Dam Site Marina (Dam Site Historic District / Marina Vista) (southern end of lake) - Largest marina on Elephant Butte; slips (covered/uncovered, houseboat capable), fuel, convenience store, kayak/SUP rentals. Adjacent lodging, RV, historic area. Good southern access.
Navajo Lake (Northern NM)
- Navajo Lake Marina (Navajo Dam, Pine Site of Navajo Lake State Park) - Full-service marina on NM's 2nd largest lake (165+ miles shoreline). 600+ slips, fuel dock, store, rentals, recent expansions and improvements. Convenient to Farmington, NM and Durango, CO areas.
Use Dockwa or direct marina contact for transient availability. Public ramps at both state parks (day use and camping fees apply; check current rates). High winds and afternoon thermals are common—good for sailing but require caution. Lake levels can drop dramatically in drought years (see RGYC site for historical data). Both lakes support a mix of power, sail, fishing, and houseboats.
Marine Surveyors
- Johnson Marine Surveys (Chama, NM - SAMS Accredited Marine Surveyor, Yachts & Small Craft) - Based in northern New Mexico; serves the region for sail and power surveys.
- Limited dedicated local marine surveyors in New Mexico due to the inland high-desert lake focus. Many NM boat owners use traveling surveyors from Texas, Arizona, Colorado, or other Southwest states.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for New Mexico or "travel" / Southwest. Contact Rio Grande Yacht Club or the marinas (Marina Del Sur, Dam Site, Navajo Lake Marina) for current local recommendations familiar with NM lake conditions, UV exposure, and trailerable boats.
Surveyors should be familiar with high-elevation lakes, strong winds, and fluctuating water levels. Plan ahead; travel adders apply for out-of-state surveyors. Local clubs and marinas are the best source for referrals on short notice.
Brokerages
- Limited dedicated sailboat brokerages in New Mexico; sales are often private, through marinas, or the yacht club.
- Search current New Mexico sailboat listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Inventory is mostly smaller trailerable sailboats, day-sailers, and compact cruisers suited to the reservoirs (few large keelboats).
- Local marinas (Marina Del Sur, Dam Site, Navajo Lake Marina) and Rio Grande Yacht Club members often know of boats for sale or can provide referrals. Many NM sailors also monitor markets in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado.
The NM market is small and seasonal. Trailer-sailers dominate due to the lakes and high desert setting. Work with marinas or the club for local knowledge on condition and value in this unique environment.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Rio Grande Yacht Club (RGYC) (Elephant Butte Lake) - The main organized sailing club in New Mexico, hosting regattas, fall series races, beach parties/raft-ups, training, cruises, and social events. Focus on racing, cruising, and boating safety on the lake. Mast-up storage area available. Events often open to the public; check calendar on site. Also tracks lake levels and state park info. Contact via rgyc.org or local numbers 505-328-4826 / 208-221-6510.
- Additional informal sailing activity on Navajo Lake and smaller waters; trailer-sailor groups common.
- New Mexico Sailing Clubs - US Sailing
RGYC is the heart of the sailing community at Elephant Butte—welcoming for both racers and cruisers in a spectacular high-desert setting. The season is nearly year-round but weather, wind, and water levels dictate; summer heat and winter can be factors. Check the club site and NM State Parks for current fees, conditions, and events. Strong emphasis on safety given remote locations and variable winds.
