⛵ Nevada - Sailing Resources
Nevada offers high-altitude sailing on Lake Tahoe (shared with California — stunning deep blue waters, cold, with limited public slips on the NV side at Incline Village area; many boaters use CA-side marinas like Tahoe Keys) and large-reservoir sailing on Lake Mead near Las Vegas (desert setting with active sailing community, yacht clubs, and extensive marinas). Other options include Lahontan Reservoir and Walker Lake. Strong winds, hot summers, and cold water on Tahoe are key factors; focus on protected coves and marinas.
Boater Education
- Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Boater Education - Boaters born on or after January 1, 1983, must successfully complete an NDOW-approved boater education course before operating a motorized vessel over 15 hp or PWC on Nevada’s interstate waters (Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, Colorado River sections, Topaz Lake). The certificate must be carried onboard. Minimum age 14 to operate a PWC. NDOW recommends education for all boaters.
Approved courses available online (e.g., Boat-Ed.com/nevada) and in-person or via manual + exam through NDOW. Pass the exam (typically 80% or higher) to receive the Boater Education Certificate. Full details, study materials, and class info on the NDOW boating education page.
Marinas & Harbors
Lake Tahoe (NV side has limited public transient slips; Incline Village area offers some storage/rentals and access, with many using nearby CA facilities like Tahoe Keys for larger sailboats). Lake Mead (near Las Vegas) has the strongest infrastructure for transients and long-term slips in a massive reservoir. Other lakes have more limited options. Dockwa or direct calls for reservations; seasonal considerations apply.
Lake Tahoe (NV Side / Incline Village Area)
- North Tahoe Marina (Tahoe Vista, near Incline Village) - Marina/launch/dry storage; public access points for the NV side of the lake. Good for smaller sailboats and day use.
- Action Water Sports of Incline Village - Premium boat rentals, jet skis, water sports; limited slip options but convenient NV-side base.
- Incline Boat Storage & Marine (Incline Village) - Family-owned storage (enclosed), service, maintenance since 1989; one of the few fully enclosed storage on NV side. Trailers also stored on-site.
- Crystal Bay Marine - Local marine services and access near the NV/CA line.
- Note: Tahoe Keys Marina (primarily CA side but serves NV boaters) is the largest inland marina on Tahoe with full services, launch, travel lift, and sailboat rigging support. Many Tahoe sailors stage from NV but use CA facilities for slips.
Lake Mead (Near Las Vegas / Boulder City)
- Lake Mead Marina (Hemenway Harbor, Boulder City) - One of the largest inland marinas in the world (~1,500 slips + dry storage), transients, fuel, full marine service/repair (hoists up to 60 ft), stores, restaurants, rentals (boats, kayaks, paddleboards). Major hub for sailboats; active yacht club presence.
- Las Vegas Boat Harbor (nearby, part of Boating Lake Mead group) - Additional slips, services, and on-water sales/brokerage. Combined facilities offer extensive transients and long-term options.
- Temple Bar Marina (remote eastern Lake Mead) - Covered and uncovered slips (30-75 ft), monthly/annual rentals, fuel, store, basic services. More secluded option with good access to the lake's eastern arms.
Other Lakes
- Lahontan Reservoir (near Fallon) - Public boat ramps and limited commercial access; good for smaller sailboats and day sailing in a desert reservoir setting.
- Walker Lake and other smaller bodies - Public access points; more limited infrastructure but viable for trailer-sailors.
Lake Tahoe NV-side slips are scarce and often tied to long-term rentals or private; transients are easier on the CA side but NV boaters have good launch access. Lake Mead offers the best transient and slip availability for sailboats in the state. Always confirm depths, wind conditions (Tahoe can be challenging), and seasonal water levels (Mead fluctuates significantly).
Marine Surveyors
- Northstar Marine Survey (James R. Lang, SAMS) - Las Vegas-based, serves Lake Mead and regional waters for yachts and small craft.
- Pacific Maritime Consultants (Marc Pearson, NAMS) - Henderson, NV; pre-purchase, insurance, and condition surveys for recreational craft on Lake Mead, Lake Mojave, and surrounding areas. Serves NV, southern CA, AZ, UT, Baja.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for Nevada. Additional options in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area for high-altitude lake surveys.
Nevada has a solid selection of accredited surveyors serving the Las Vegas/Lake Mead area and some for Tahoe/Reno. Local yacht clubs (Nevada Yacht Club, Lake Mead Yacht Club) and marinas are excellent sources for current recommendations familiar with desert reservoir and alpine lake conditions.
Brokerages
- On The Water Boat Sales / Boating Lake Mead (at Lake Mead Marina and Las Vegas Boat Harbor) - Full-service on-water sales and brokerage for power, sail, houseboats, and more. Largest in southern Nevada with experienced staff; listings right at the marinas.
- Local dealers in the Las Vegas/Henderson and Reno areas handle brokerage alongside new/used sales. West Coast Boat Center Reno serves the northern part of the state.
- Search current Nevada sailboat listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Inventory is smaller than coastal states but includes lake-specific cruisers and trailer-sailers suited to Tahoe and Mead.
Lake Mead has the most active on-water brokerage scene in the state. Many sailboat sales happen through the marinas themselves. Tahoe/Reno buyers often look at CA listings as well. Local dealers can assist with transport and registration.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Nevada Yacht Club (based at Lake Mead Marina) - Nevada's premier sailing club on Lake Mead (over 100 members, 60+ years). Active racing (Nevada Cup fleet), social cruises, sail training/safety courses, "Women In Sailing" events, and monthly meetings. Very welcoming; open to new sailors. Based in the Las Vegas/Boulder City area.
- Lake Mead Yacht Club - Social club dedicated to boating with like-minded people. Promotes safety, conservation, and community. Social events often open to non-members; clubhouse at Lake Mead. Good for power and sail boaters.
- Tahoe Yacht Club (serves Lake Tahoe with NV-side members and events) - Historic club with racing, junior programs, and social activities on the lake. Strong presence for Tahoe sailing.
- Lake Mead Junior Sail Academy - Introduces sailing to youth in a safe environment on Lake Mead.
- Additional activity through marinas and informal groups on Lahontan and other lakes. US Sailing directory for more.
- Nevada Sailing Clubs - US Sailing
Lake Mead has the most organized sailing scene in Nevada with the Nevada Yacht Club driving racing, training, and social events. Tahoe sailing is more cross-border (CA/NV clubs). Clubs emphasize education and community alongside racing/cruising. Many welcome guests or offer introductory programs. Desert conditions mean excellent visibility but plan for wind and temperature swings.
