⛵ New York - Sailing Resources
New York offers extraordinary sailing diversity: the protected yet busy Long Island Sound (premier cruising and one-design racing waters with historic yacht clubs), the tidal Hudson River with access to New York Harbor and the big city, scenic Lake Champlain (north country, international boundary waters), the Great Lakes (Ontario and Erie) on the western border, plus the Finger Lakes and other inland options. Strong tidal currents, commercial traffic, and summer crowds on coastal waters; excellent transient facilities via Dockwa in many harbors. World-class racing heritage alongside relaxed cruising.

Marinas & Harbors
New York has extensive transient options, especially on Long Island Sound and the Hudson via Dockwa. Popular stops include protected harbors on the North Shore and East End of LI, historic river towns, and Lake Champlain’s quiet coves and marinas. Summer is peak; book ahead for weekends and events. Commercial traffic, tides, and shoals require attention on coastal waters. Many yacht clubs offer limited guest dockage or moorings.
Long Island Sound & North Shore / East End
- Sag Harbor Village Marina (Sag Harbor) - Popular East End destination with transient dockage and moorings via Dockwa. Village facility in historic harbor; good access to town amenities. Seasonal and transient options.
- Sag Harbor Yacht Club (Sag Harbor) - Welcomes transients (no club affiliation required) on fixed docks up to 200 ft. Dockage, electric, water, fuel. Beautifully maintained in the heart of the village.
- City Island Yacht Club / North Minneford Yacht Club area (City Island, Bronx) - Multiple facilities on City Island offering slips, moorings, and transients close to NYC and western Long Island Sound. Good base for Sound cruising or harbor access; amenities and services nearby.
- Northport area (Northport Harbor) - Seymour’s Boatyard and Britannia Yachting Center offer transient moorings and dockage in a protected North Shore harbor. Walkable village with restaurants and services.
Hudson River & NYC Area
- Nyack Boat Club (Nyack) - On the west shore; guest moorings and transient dockage available. Launch service, clubhouse access for guests; convenient to the Tappan Zee area and river cruising.
- Poughkeepsie Yacht Club (Staatsburg) - Guest docks and moorings on the Hudson; easy access for transients heading north or south. Clubhouse and facilities.
- Rondout Yacht Basin / Kingston area - Popular stop with transients, services, and access to the historic Rondout waterfront and river.
- Additional options in NYC harbor and lower Hudson (e.g., near City Island or further south) via Dockwa and commercial marinas.
Lake Champlain (Northern NY)
- Chazy Yacht Club (Chazy, on Great Chazy River) - Full-service marina with 160+ slips, protected no-wake river access to Lake Champlain. Affordable seasonal and transient options; excellent northern lake base near Canadian border.
- Plattsburgh Boat Basin / Boatworks Marine (Plattsburgh area) - Multiple facilities with slips, services, and direct lake access. Good stop for northern Champlain cruising.
- Essex Marina (Essex) - Picturesque deep-water spot in the “narrows”; popular rendezvous and getaway destination on the NY shore.
- Whitehall (southern end, Champlain Canal) - Canal access, transients, and services for boats entering/exiting the lake system.
Great Lakes & Other Waters
- Sodus Point / Sodus Bay area (Lake Ontario) - Active sailing community with marinas and yacht clubs on the western NY Great Lakes shoreline. Good access for larger freshwater cruising.
- Finger Lakes and other inland lakes - Limited commercial marinas but public ramps and smaller facilities; trailer-sailor friendly.
Use Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip for many transients. Long Island Sound and Hudson have heavy commercial and recreational traffic—monitor VHF and watch for tugs/barges. Tides and currents significant (especially Hell Gate and river sections). Lake Champlain offers more relaxed big-lake sailing with mountain scenery. Many facilities seasonal (May–Oct typical); call for current transient rates and availability. Strong summer winds and afternoon thunderstorms possible.
Marine Surveyors
- Lowe’s Marine Survey (John N. Lowe, SAMS® AMS®, Stony Brook/Long Island) - Pre-purchase, insurance, damage, and appraisal surveys for power and sail since 1997. Long-time SAMS leader.
- Sound Shore Marine Surveyors, LLC (John Mecionis, SAMS® AMS®, Long Island) - Yacht and small craft surveys serving Long Island and surrounding areas.
- Oceanis Marine Services (Charlie Gruetzner, SAMS, Cortlandt/Hudson River area) - Surveys on the Hudson and metro NY region.
- Additional accredited surveyors in upstate NY (e.g., Alexandria Bay/Thousand Islands area on Lake Ontario, Sodus Point). Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for New York. Local yacht clubs (Larchmont, City Island, Sag Harbor, Chazy) and marinas are excellent sources for current recommendations familiar with local conditions (tides, commercial traffic, lake vs. coastal).
NY has strong coverage of accredited surveyors, especially on Long Island Sound and the Hudson. Surveyors often cover both sail and power. Plan ahead during peak season; many travel within the state or region.
Brokerages
- Active sailboat brokerage market, particularly on Long Island Sound (City Island, North Shore, East End/Sag Harbor), Hudson River communities, and western NY Great Lakes ports. Inventory ranges from classic one-design racers and trailerables to coastal cruisers and performance boats.
- Search current New York sailboat listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Local full-service yards and yacht clubs frequently have brokerage connections or private sales.
- Notable activity around City Island (multiple brokers and yards), Sag Harbor, and the Hudson. Many buyers/sellers also consider nearby CT, NJ, and MA listings.
The NY market is large and varied due to the multiple distinct sailing regions. Work with established local brokers or yards for knowledge of specific waters (e.g., draft limits for Hudson or Sound racing boats). Private sales common through clubs.

Long Island Sound has one of the densest concentrations of active yacht clubs and racing fleets in the country. Lake Champlain and the Hudson offer more relaxed but still vibrant scenes. Most clubs welcome guests or have reciprocal arrangements; contact ahead. Strong emphasis on safety, education, and junior programs. Busy summer season with regattas; shoulder seasons (spring/fall) can be excellent for cruising with fewer crowds.
