⛵ Virginia - Sailing Resources
Virginia offers world-class sailing on the Chesapeake Bay (with its many tributaries, historic ports like Norfolk, Hampton, and Urbanna, and direct Atlantic access via the Bay Bridge-Tunnel area) and the Atlantic coast (Chincoteague, Virginia Beach). Inland options include Smith Mountain Lake (large, scenic with good sailing), Lake Anna, and others. The Chesapeake is a premier East Coast cruising and racing ground with protected waters, islands, and strong club scenes. Excellent transient infrastructure, especially in Hampton Roads and on the Bay. Strong brokerage and regatta activity.
Boater Education
- Virginia DWR Boating Safety Education - Required for all personal watercraft (PWC) operators age 14 and older, and for all operators (regardless of age) of motorboats with 10 hp or greater engine. Must complete a NASBLA-approved boating safety course and carry the certificate/card (or course completion proof) while operating. No minimum age to take a course. Out-of-state NASBLA certificates generally accepted if valid. The certification is lifetime once obtained.
Approved courses include free BoatUS Foundation online (DWR-approved) and classroom options via USCG Auxiliary, US Power Squadrons, or DWR. Carry the card/certificate + photo ID in some cases. Full details, approved providers, and how to obtain on the DWR boating education requirement page. Strongly recommended for all boaters on the busy Chesapeake and coastal waters.
Marinas & Harbors
Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads have extensive transients, slips, and full services in Norfolk, Hampton, and other ports with direct Bay and ocean access. Smith Mountain Lake offers protected inland options with good marinas. Many via Dockwa. Bay: tides, currents, and commercial traffic; watch for weather. Book ahead for peak season and events (e.g., around Norfolk or Annapolis area access).

SML is more protected and scenic for inland sailing. Many clubs offer reciprocity or guest dockage—contact ahead. Fuel, pump-out, and repairs at major spots. Book for peak summer and regattas.
Marine Surveyors
- Strong coverage in Hampton Roads/Norfolk, Chesapeake Bay, and Smith Mountain Lake areas via SAMS/NAMS surveyors experienced with Bay boats, coastal vessels, and inland lake cruisers.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for Virginia (search Norfolk, Hampton, Smith Mountain Lake, or specific ports). Local marinas (Bay Point, Norfolk YC, Little Creek, Bayside on SML) and clubs (Norfolk YC, Hampton YC, Fishing Bay YC) are excellent sources for current recommendations familiar with tidal Bay conditions, commercial traffic, and regional boat types.
- Surveyors should understand Chesapeake specifics (tides, currents, weather) and lake conditions for accurate surveys.
Plan ahead for busy season; many surveyors cover the full state or travel. Experience with both coastal/Bay passagemaking and protected lake sailing adds value. Local knowledge from Hampton Roads or SML marinas is highly recommended.
Brokerages
- Very active market on the Chesapeake (Hampton Roads/Norfolk is a major hub) and Smith Mountain Lake for sailboats (cruisers, racers, and coastal-capable vessels). Strong inventory for Bay and inland sailing.
- Search current Virginia sailboat listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Strong presence in Norfolk/Hampton and SML areas.
- Local dealers and marinas/clubs (e.g., Norfolk YC, Hampton YC, Bayside on SML) often have brokerage connections. Many buyers also consider nearby MD, NC, or DE listings due to the shared Chesapeake and Mid-Atlantic sailing scenes.
The VA market emphasizes versatile Bay/coastal boats and lake cruisers. Work with established local brokers familiar with Chesapeake conditions (tides, weather) and popular designs. Private sales common through the active club and marina communities.
